#HumanBehindEveryNumber Introduced at PCT 2017

KCR CEO presented the initiative to industry leaders in Amsterdam

Berlin – 8 December 2017 – KCR CEO, Mike Jagielski, presented the project #HumanBehindEveryNumber (#HBEN) to the PCT 2017 audience in Amsterdam last week. The #HBEN initiative is the company's contribution to a patient-centric approach in clinical trials, and is based on the voices of real patients who participated or are participating in clinical studies. 

“We would like to engage the life science community in a discussion on what patient-centricity really means,” said Mike Jagielski during his presentation. “Our project is dedicated to the clinical study stakeholders: pharma and biopharma industries, contract research organizations as well as to patients who are the main actors in the process of bringing new medical treatments to market.”

The idea behind the initiative was to understand patients’ requirements: to learn about their motivations, concerns and convictions before and after the clinical study enrolment. KCR teamed up with a service design firm, The Story, to apply a service design methodology and view clinical trial as a service and patient as a client. The methodology made it possible to fully map the patients’ journey when in clinical trial and understand the emotions associated with each stage.

The project was run across different countries interviewing patients of different nationalities, background, age and indications. The project team also listened to investigators, academic persons, and industry thought leaders. After gathering these views, the first conclusion was that patient-centricity means diversity. Therefore, true patient-centric solutions require a high degree of customization.

“There are some factors to be considered for a successful design of patient-centric solutions, e.g. region, country specifics, educational background, age, therapeutic area,” summarized Mike Jagielski. “All these factors are help to manage fear and comfort of patients in clinical trials. This is very important to influence these emotions as they affect the recruitment and drop-out rate of clinical trials participants.”
